Astronomy
Day 2008 In recognition of National Astronomy
Week, this year occurring May 5 May 11, the Cumberland Astronomical Society will
be hosting an Astronomy Day star party on Saturday, May 10th at Moss
Wright Park in Goodlettsville, Tennessee. Astronomy Day activities will
begin at 2:00pm and last until 10:00pm. This event is weather permitting.
On Astronomy Day, thousands of people
who have never looked through a telescope will have an opportunity to see first
hand what has so many amateur and professional astronomers all excited.
Astronomy clubs, science museums, observatories, universities, planetariums,
laboratories, libraries, and nature centers throughout the nation will be
hosting special events and activities to acquaint their population with local
astronomical resources and facilities. Many of these events are located
at non-astronomical sites, too such as shopping malls, parks, and urban centers
in order to truly bring astronomy to the people.
CAS will have telescopes set up for
safe solar observing during the daylight hours as well as telescopes and
binoculars set up for nighttime viewing. Those attending will be able to view
the moon, Saturn, and Mars, as well as many star clusters and beautiful double
stars. Also, astronomy related handouts will be provided free of charge.
CAS will also provide star maps showing
the location of objects of interest for that night.
This special event is open to anyone
interested in astronomy or those with even a passing interest in the night
sky. Bring the family and join in the fun!
